This transcription was made from a photocopy of the original paper on file in the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, N.C. The court house copy is filed in Will Book D, pages 76 - 78. The copy in the will book contains numerous changes and "corrections" inserted by the original copyist. Surnames appearing in the document: EDWARDS, GRAYBEAL, HARDIN, HOUCK, SHOWN NOTE: The will refers to the individual normally known as "Peter Jr" as Peter Sr., which was in fact correct at the time of his death. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the name of God amen. I Peter Graybeal Sr of the County of Ashe State of North Carolina being of sound and disposing mind and memory do Make publish and ordain This my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Graybeal all the money Bonds, Notes and other c----s? of debt due me which may be on hand at my decease, all my house hold and kitchen furniture of every kind my Buggy & harnefs, and so much of whatever stock I may have on hand or she may desire to keep My will is that after the death of wife Mary my whole estate not disposed of by this my last will & Testament or by deeds of Gift or by my Executor for funeral expenses be disposed of by my executor at public sale, and the proceeds be equally divided among all my children (and in case they should be dead their Heirs) except my sons David Graybeal and Jacob Graybeal, and in said division refference [sic] must be had by my Executor to the amount I have or may have against my children advancements either in money or property made by me to them, and in case any of my children shall shall [sic]have received more then [sic] their distributive share such one shall be required to pay back so as to make them Equal The share of my eldest daughter Catherine Edwards who was the wife of Clisby Edwards after deducting for advancements to her during her life made by me I give and bequeath unto her daughter Olive Edwards one share to be paid after the decease of my wife to her by my Executor The share of my daughter Susan Houck wife Henry Houck after deducting for advancements made by me to her I wish to be equally divided share and share alike among all her children to be paid to them after the death of my wife To my son David Graybeal & his heirs I will bequeath the sum of five dollars to be paid to him by my Executor after the death of my wife Mary Graybeal To my son Jacob Graybeal my will is to pay to Jacob Graybeals children one Hundred Dollars which the said Jacob Graybeal is due me after the death of my wife Mary Graybeal and nothing more to be paid to Jacob Graybeal out of my property The share of my daughter Mary Shown wife of Isaac H. Shown after deducting for advancements by me to her and to her Husband made in real & personal property I will and bequeath to her the said Mary Shown and Isaac H. Shown her husband during their natural life and then to be divided share and share alike among the bodily Heirs of the said Mary Shown to be paid to the said Mary & Isaac H. Shown by my executor after the death of my wife Mary Graybeal The share of my son John Graybeal after deducting for advancements made by me to him I wish to be paid by my Executor to him after the death of my wife Mary Graybeal, an Equal part of all my estate. For the amount of advancements made by me to my children I direct my executor to a book Kept for that purpose which he will find Each one charged with the amount each one has received from me, said book is now in my pofsesion. Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint and friend Richard G.
