Hartnett patrickhartnett@shaw.ca Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm Funeral of Late William Taylor at the Creel Chapel Today-Lived Here Seventeen Years. The body of the late William Taylor, who was , it is believed, the oldest man in Montana when he died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Boucher, of 308 West Watson Street, lay in state at the Creel Chapel Wednesday while many who knew him, as well as others, viewed the features of the centenarian who had he lived until October 31, this year, would have been 103 years old. The funeral will be held at the chapel at 9:30 this morning when the last rites of the Catholic Church will be carried out. Mr. Taylor came to Lewistown 17 years ago with his wife, who died in 1924. He was quite active until this year. He was a native of Quebec and was a pioneer of North Dakota, locating in that state in 1880. During practically all of his active life he followed farming. (June 26 1934 Lewistown Democrat News) OLDEST MAN IN CENTRAL MONT. DIES THIS CITY WILLIAM TAYLOR, AGED ONE HUNDRED TWO YEARS SEVEN MONTHS AND 25 DAYS. FUNERAL THURSDAY William Taylor undoubtedbly the oldest man in Central Montana and perhaps the oldest man in the entire state, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Boucher, at 308 West Watson Street, shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday morning. He was a native of Quebec Canada, where he was born Oct. 31, 1831, being thus 102 years seven months and 25 days old. Mr. Taylor took up farming in his native Canada as a youth and followed it there until he moved with his family to North Dakata in 1880 with his wife and family. He removed to Lewistown in 1917 where his wife Annie E. Taylor died 10 years ago. After that he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Boucher. While he had not been very active since, he looked after the garden through the last summer and enjoyed the light exercise it gave him. This year he had made little effort to keep going, seeming to be exhausted by the burden of his years. One son, W. J. Taylor resides here and another son, John G. Taylor, lives in Detroit Michigan. In addition to Mrs. Boucher, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles Orchard, of Star City, Saskatchewan, Canada and Mrs. John J. Reis, of Pontiac Illinois. The funeral will be held from the Creel Chapel at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday morning. Peter was born on April 6, 1923, in Lewistown, the son of Peter M. and Edna (Poetter) Teigen Sr. He was raised on the family ranch at Teigen and attended the Teigen School, Grass Range School and graduated from Fergus County High School. After graduating high school, Peter enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Claxton under Admiral Arleigh Burke in the "Little Beaver Squadron." This squadron was one of the most active of WW II and fought in pivotal battles in both European and Pacific Theaters. Unknown to Peter, he provided broad cover for his brother Mons during the occupation of Bouganville, Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Peter was honorably discharged from the service in 1945 and returned to the ranch. He attended the University of Montana and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Law in 1951. In the autumn of 1953, Peter met Gladys Housel in Lewistown. He asked her for a date, and she tried to put him off with excuses of working at the radio station. She finally gave in when Peter told her wasn't driving 50 miles to see her without a date! Six months later they were married, on June 12, 1954,and have been constant companions ever since. They bought and moved to their own ranch near Winnett in 1959. Peter and Gladys loved traveling and have enjoyed taking several cruises and attending the National Finals Rodeo for several years. Peter Teigen grew up with his brother Mons, driving teams of horses, herding sheep, and chasing cows - just like any other ranch kids of their era. In his adult life, Peter spent 45 years working for the Teigen Land and Livestock Company. He was president of the board of directors as well as manager of the ranch for 25 years, retiring in 1996. He had a deep concern for the management of rangeland, and wasa proactive member of the ranching community promoting constructive rangeland practices. Honest, forthright, trustworthy and dependable are just a few words to describe this man. Slow to speak, slower to judge, quick to support and last to seek recognition - he was highly respected by his family and neighbors. Peter served his community with distinction in many capacities including: Board member of the Cooperative State Grazing District, member of the Montana Stock Growers Association, and Past President of the Petroleum County Stock Growers. He was also past president of the Sandman Post No. 95 American Legion of Winnett, Past Master and 50-year member of Jerusalem Lodge No. 115 AF & AM of Winnett, Past Patron of Rimrock Chapter No. 82 O.E.S. of Winnett, Anna Smalley Chapter No. 112 O.E.S. of Grass Range and dual membership in Jewell Chapter No. 48 O.E.S. of Roundup, member of both Scottish Rite of Billings, York Rite Bodies of Great Falls, Al Bedoo Shrine of Billings and Central Montana Shrine Club of Lewistown and Central Montana Nile Club.
