He was born February 15, 1929, in Slayton, to Henry and Frances (Hebbleman) Ella. Rod attended school in Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1947. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950 and served his country during the Korean Conflict until exiting the service in 1954. Rod married Dolores Halbur on February 19, 1955, in Iona. After their marriage, the couple lived in Worthington. Rod worked as a lineman, and later as a foreman, at Nobles Coop Electric, in Worthington for 37 years, before retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Worthington, the Knights of Columbus, the Worthington American Legion, and the Worthington VFW. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
