"Lewis Speas Dead Former Traverse City Man Passed Away in Upper Peninsula. Lewis Speas, age 85, a former resident of Traverse City and father of Henry Speas of this city, died at Gould City, Wednesday morning of old age. He was formerly of Owosso but made his home with his son at 250 East Street until five years ago when he went north to live with a daughter. His wife died twenty years ago." The daughter mentioned in the above notice was Henrietta Carolina Speas McPherson. The deceased wife of Lewis who died twenty years prior to him was, Matilda Mayerhoffer Speas and she is buried in Shiawassee Co.. Lewis Speas lived in New Haven Township, Shiawassee Co., MI upon coming to Michigan from the Markham Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada about 1865. He raised a family of about 10 children. Their names: Lewis, Augustus "Gus", Henrietta "Nettie", Lottie, Mary, Henry, Alice, Jacob, and William. Two children died in infancy. The "Gus" mentioned above is my great grandfather and thus my interest in Shiawassee County genealogy. dz
