ARRESTED AND JAILED FOR BEING DRUNK, THIS FELLOW FINDS PLENTIFUL SUPPLY OF THE AMBER BREW IN NEIGHBORING CELL, HELPS SELF When George Tillotson, arrested on the streets Saturday night for being drunk, woke up in the city jail Sunday, he had a headache, and an overwhelming desire for a drink of beer. The mere fact that he was in jail did not prevent him from getting it and during the day, he only had twenty-one bottles, which is twenty-one more than one is supposed to have in jail. It was this way, a week previous to Tillotson's arrest, the police had raided a boarding house and confiscated six beer cases, containing a total of thirty-one bottles of beer. They put the cases in a cell in the jail. Saturday night when Tillotson was arrested, he was placed in the cell next to the one containing the beer. Sunday morning, Tillotson spied the cases and by attaching a piece of wire to a stick he was able to fish the beer out, a bottle at a time. When it was discovered that Tillotson was acquiring another jag, he had consumed twenty-one bottles. Most of the empties he had placed under a mattress on top of the cell. Tillotson paid a fine of $10.20 on Monday morning for being drunk and was released. Tuesday morning, however, he was taken into custody again and he and Chief Patterson had a session in the later's office. Tillotson admitted taking the beer. "I was dry and a man will do most anything when he is real dry" he told the officers. "Besides I had an awful headache and thought the beer would do me good." Tillotson was released without further punishment for his breach of bastile etiquette. MT PLEASANT MAN TO PRACTICE HERE------John R. Clark of Mt.
