Succop, 95, of Ionia passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Heartlands Health Care Center in Ionia. He was born the son of Rev. B.H. and Katharine (Riedel) Succop on Feb. 20, 1907 in Ionia. Martin was a life long member of St. Johns Lutheran Church where his father was Pastor for many years. He served his Lord as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent and Bible class leader for over 75 years, serving on the Church’s Board of Education and Elders. He was a member of the Ionia County Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee, the board of the Ionia County Commission on Aging, the Michigan District Boards of the Department of Social Services in Ionia County. Martin retired as the Director in 1973. He is survived by four daughters Katherine (Ned) Daugherty of Ft. Collins, Colo., Dorothy (Robert) Schroeder of Frankenmuth, Helen Succop of Birmingham, Ala. and Carol (James) Thieme of Decator, Ind.; four grandchildren Lynn Friesen, Mike Daugherty, Marty and Christi Thieme. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ottilie on Jan. 17, 1993, two brothers, B.H. Succop and Theodore Succop; four sisters, Margaret Succop, Jane Succop, Helen Succop and Gertrude Closser. Funeral and committal services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday from the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Ionia with Pastor Joseph Fremer officiating. Interment will take place in the Spring at Highland Park Cemetery. Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Cook Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Johns Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, the Heartlands Health Care Center or the contributions of one’s choice in care of Cook Funeral Home.
