The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, 1993
Josephine Graff Strong, 80, of Palm Desert, Calif., formerly of the Ionia 
area, died Sunday in California.  She was born May 6, 1913 on a farm near 
Orleans, the daughter of Charles F. and Ola Lambertson Graff.  She was 
graduated from Belding High School and Michigan State University in 1933.  She 
married Norman Howell Strong in 1934 and along with his brother, Eldon, 
operated Strong brother’s produce in Ionia until 1945.

From 1948 until 1956 they farmed a large acreage farm in Ionia County.  She 
worked as an advisor for 4-H.  She began her teaching career in mathematics in 
Taos, New Mexico, and Henderson, Nevada, and then taught at India High School 
in Calif.  She served as chairperson of the mathematics department and advisor 
to the Calif. Scholastic Federation.  She was an active member of Delta Kappa 
Gamma, of the Calif. Teachers Association, and served as chairperson of the 
teacher’s negotiations committee for Desert Sands School District.  

Her husband, Norman, preceded her in death on July 6, 1990.  She is survived 
by three sons, John F. of Houston, Tx., Gary E. of Palm Desert, and Robert N. 
of San Jose, Calif.; six grandsons; and five granddaughters.  She was preceded 
in death by one son, Charles, in 1991.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Cook Funeral Home, with 
Margaret Seidelman officiating.  Organist will be Mary Cusack.  Pallbearers 
will be John Strong, Robert Strong, Gary Strong, Edgar Strong and Ned 
Lamberston.  Burial will be in Orleans Cemetery.  The family will be at the 
funeral home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.  A memorial has been established for the 
choice of the donor, in care of the funeral home.
