Ionia Sentinel Standard, 2002

Norma R. (Petersen) Nyland, 89, of Ionia passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, 
in Ionia.

She was born Aug. 3, 1912 in Ohio, the daughter of Anton and Amanda (Nielsen) 
Petersen.  She graduated from Ionia High School in 1930 and Blodgett Hospital 
School of Nursing in 1933.  She worked at Case Western Reserve University 
Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met Gerrit Nyland and went on to marry 
him in Cleveland in 1936.

They moved to Ionia in 1948 where they owned and operated Nyland Oil Co. until 
1972.  They retired in Huntsville, Ala. and Fayetterville, Tenn., returning to 
Ionia in 1984.  She painted with local artisans in the 1950s and 1960s and 
displayed her artwork locally for several years.  She was also an avid gardener 
and a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church. 

She is survived by her son, William (Gretchen) Nyland of Orleans; daughter, 
Gwen (Ronald) Rubach of Clarksville; brother, Karl Petersen of Ionia; sister, 
Bertha Nielsen of California; grandchildren, Ellen Rubach of Phoenix, Ariz., 
Daniel (Debra) Rubach of Wisconsin and Barbara Weatherbee of Lansing; great-
grandchildren, Grace and Gage Weatherbee and Jacob and Benjamin Rubach.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit in 1989; and brothers, Tom 
Petersen and Fred Petersen.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia 
with Rev. Dan L. Seng officiating.  Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., 
Monday.  Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution to St. Johns Lutheran 
Church or Ionia County Commission on Aging.  Envelopes are available at the 
funeral home.
