Mrs. J.J. McCann, wife of Dr. J.J. McCann died last night shortly after seven o’clock at the residence on Harter street after an illness of about 24 hours. Mrs. McCann’s death was unexpected and a great shock to the many friends throughout the city. Although she had been feeling rather poorly for about two weeks there was nothing in her condition to cause alarm. Saturday night she did not feel as well and a nurse was called to care for her. Sunday morning she seemed to be as well as could be expected and Dr. McCann left the house on his calls about noon. While he was gone, Mrs. McCann’s condition became suddenly alarming and before he could reach the house, although he was notified immediately she lapsed into semi-unconsciousness and was unable to recognize those about her. Puerperal convulsions was the cause of death. Dr. Richard Smith of Grand Rapids was called and together with Drs. Kitson and Marsh made every effort to save the life of the mother. In this they were unsuccessful and death ensued about 7:15. An infant 16 months of age, and an infant daughter, born Sunday afternoon survive with the husband. Mrs. McCann was the daughter of Mrs. Frank Shutz and leaves besides her husband and children, her mother, one sister, Miss Elizabeth Funkey, one brother, Caspar Funkey and two half sisters, Misses Eva and Bertha Shutz. The funeral will be held from the church of SS. Peter & Paul Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock. ------ Ionia Mother and Babe Buried in Same Coffin (Special to The Evening Press.)
