C. Gregory, Editor El Paso, Texas—Max Koss, 84, former Ionia businessman and political leader, died at his retirement residence Saturday. He was for many years the owner of Koss Rexall Drugs, located on the street level of the Johnson Building on West Main Street, and was long active in Democratic party politics. Born Dec. 7, 1905, in Nyatic, Conn., the son of Morris and Rose Koss, he attended grade school and high school in Perry, where his father was a businessman, and then graduated from Ferris State University in 1926. Immediately after graduation, Koss came to Ionia where he worked for the late Harry McGowan. He was married to Anna Dee Nelson on Oct. 7, 1933, in Ionia. They made their home in Ionia until a few years ago, although they wintered in Texas after retirement. Prior to 1946, Koss and McGowan were partners and the pharmacy was known as McGowan and Koss Rexall Drugs. In 1946, after McGowan’s death, Koss bought the business and continued as its proprietor until 1973 when he sold the business to Edward Sleder. The location had been a drugstore since before the turn of the century. Long active in Democrat party affairs, Koss served as an alternate Michigan delegate to the 1952 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the convention that nominated Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson as candidate for the presidency. He was again an alternate Michigan delegate to the 1960 Democratic National Convention, the convention that nominated John F. Kennedy as candidate for the presidency. For many years, Koss served party offices in both Ionia City and Ionia County, including service as both city and county chairman. Surviving in addition to his wife, are a son, Lyle Koss, of El Paso, Texas; a daughter, Maxine Koss Allen, of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Silverman of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Louis, long-time Saranac pharmacist, in 1986. Cremation has taken place and funeral services are pending in El Paso. His wife’s address is 1575 Belvedere, Room 528, El Paso, Texas 79912.
