Kernen, 65, of Ionia died Friday at his home. He was born the son of Ralph and Lena Dawson Kernen on July 3, 1924 in Ionia. He was graduated from Ionia High School in 1941. He worked for the Michigan Department of Transportation for 35 years and the City of Ionia for six and a half years. He was a member of the Ionia Fishing and Hunting Club, the Travelers Protective Association and was a former Ionia Jaycee member. He was a World War II veteran. Surviving are his wife Marjorie, three daughters, Melanie Bennett of Ionia, Kristine Lyons of Ionia and Cynthia Kernen of Grand Rapids; one son, Frederick of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two grandchildren, Matthew and Lynne Bennett. Also surviving are two brothers, Kenneth of Royal Oak and Robert of Ionia; and two sisters, Kate Rutz of Ionia and Joan McCord of Ionia. He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. Complete funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday from the Cook Funeral Home in Ionia with the Rev. Scott Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Easton Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the Ionia Area Hospice.
