Mike was born in Ionia on February 10, 1951, the son of Wilberta and Francis Headworth. Raised in Ionia, he left school at 17 to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He later attended Montcalm Community College and earned his Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University, putting himself through school by working summer for the Department of Natural Resources. Following graduation, he worked for the Department of Corrections for 25 dedicated years, as an officer, a trainer, and for several years as a statewide training supervisor, before retiring in 2001. Mike had a passion for bird hunting, was an avid reader, and had an intrinsic love of learning and natural gift for teaching. For many years, he was heavily involved in activities at LeValley United Methodist Church, including serving as president of the Board of Trustees and youth group leader. Mike generously volunteered time tutoring children, working with friends, and endlessly helping his wife with “school projects.” A dedicated son, husband, and father, Mike always put his family first. His faith in Jesus Christ as his personal savior gave him peace as he faced his illness. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brothers Stephen and Richard Headworth. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sue, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Zachary Estep, son Spencer, sister Barbara Finch of Texas, brother Francis Headworth and his wife Carol of Edmore, half-brothers Scott Ramirez of Howard City and Greg Sherd of Pennsylvania, beloved mother-in- law Eleanor Baker of Holland, brothers- and sisters-in-law William and Mary Baker, David Baker, and James and Karla Baker, and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at LeValley United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 1 at 2 p.m. If desired, contributions can be made c/o Sue Headworth for an Ionia Public Schools scholarship to be established in Mike’s name.
