Leslie R. Gault, for many years pastor of the Church of Christ in this city, died on Tuesday, March 5th, at his home, 52 Charlotte Ave., Detroit, following a serious surgical operation in Harper hospital four weeks ago. Mr. Gault was a preacher of more than ordinary ability and an eloquent logician. After going from Ionia in 1877, he held long pastorates at Dayton, Ohio, and Buffalo, N. Y. For nearly twenty years he has been obliged to give over his ministerial work because of loss of voice and general nervous breakdown. Born 68 years ago, in Paris, Ky., he became interested in newspaper work when a boy, and entered the office of the Paris Kentuckian as a press boy and in five years was editor and manager. Later he gave up his position and attended college in Virginia, where he graduated. From there he went to Columbia college, Kentucky where he soon became president. He spent some years in that capacity until he was forced to come north on account of rheumatism. He spent a few years in Ionia, residing on north Union St., and removed to Detroit 12 years ago. He lived in retirement for six years, when his health became much better and he took up the work of instruction in the Detroit University, editing its magazine and serving as critic and teacher in languages. He is survived by a widow and four children.
