A stone found here was carved by Sebastian "Boss" Hammond, born a slave about 1800, he bought his freedom with money earned carving tombstones. Boss was owned during his years of slavery by Upton Hammond, John Walker and Col. Thomas Hammond, who freed him in 1839.
