The Years Before 1883 The Brandenburg Church has been a part of the history of Carroll County, both beginning about the same time. Just when the first group of people met to form a Methodist Protestant Church in the area known as "Porters" is at this point unknown. Perhaps they met in the home of William Brandenburg, a miller and lumberman, who had settled on Piney Run, the area along the present Buckhorn Road. Nevertheless, it was William Brandenburg who was to become the moving force that resulted in the forming of the congregation and in building the three meeting places where the congregation has gathered for more than one hundred years. William Brandenburg, son of Jacob Brandenburg of the House of Brandenburg, Germany was born in 1798. Along with his parents he came to America and settled in Frederick County. Being a miller by trade, he moved to Howard County and operated the Roxbury and Gliosen Mills. After marrying Rachel Purdum of Frederick County, he purchased a mill and a large tract of land mostly covered with timber on Piney Run. Today Buckhorn Road and the Piney Run Estates identify that area. Mr. Brandenburg donated land for the building of a school as well as the lumber for its construction. This building served not only as a schoolhouse, but also like many other schools of that day, as a meeting place for the emerging congregations of the area. The school was used by the Methodist Protestant congregation and by the Lutheran Congregation (now Messiah Lutheran Church). Just when the first church was erected we do not know at this time. According to the Atlas of Carroll County of 1863, it had not been built. By the time the Atlas of Carroll County of 1877 was printed, both the schoolhouse and the church are identified. This would indicate that the first church building was built between 1863 and 1877. According to Mrs. Florence Brandenburg Grimm, the granddaughter of William Brandenburg, the present church was built on the same foundation as the first church building after it burned sometime apparently in 1882. The Brandenburg Church was chartered in 1897. Five trustees were elected: William Garheart (my grandfather), Henry L. Cook, James Penn (my great grandfather), George W. Cook and Henry F. (name illegible in documents). The first wedding performed in the present Brandenburg Church was that of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Cook on 12/30/1896 by Reverend G.J. Hill. The bride was Celeste P. Gist. The bridesmaid was Eula Pickett (nee Brandenburg). On October 11, 1979 an early morning fire of electrical origin destroyed part of the sanctuary and part of the educational wing while damaging all the church from smoke and water. This occurred during an early heavy snowstorm. Cleanup began immediately and Restoration Sunday was observed on Palm Sunday, March 30, 1980.
