BEN Mrs. Ben Scafidel, 71, of Natalbany succumbed June 1 at Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 2; interment was in the cemetery at Baptist; Poole Funeral Home was in charge. She is survived by eight sons, Tony of Fitzgerald, Ga., Philip of Magnolia, Miss., Elmo and Ed of Mobile, Ala., Russell of Jackson, Miss., Charles of Hammond; Kelly Scafidel of New Orleans, and Willie Scivicque of Natalbany, a son by a former marriage; two daughters, Mrs. Mary May and Mrs. Annie Rimes of Natalbany; one brother, Piercie Jones of Denham Springs; one sister, Mrs. Althea Harris of Denham Springs. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 8/05/2001 SCAFIDEL, PHILLIP MAGNOLIA, Miss. - Phillip Scafidel, 86, a native of Natalbany and resident of Magnolia, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the former maintenance superintendent of St. Regis Chip Mill in Magnolia. Known as "Pop" to his many friends and relatives, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Matilda Scafidel. After working as a young millwright in the Hammond-Natalbany area, he held numerous supervisory and managerial positions in many plants and factories in Mississippi and Louisiana, including Fernwood Industries in Fernwood, Martin Brothers Wirebound in Roseland, Ipik Door Co and Delta Match Factory in Kenner and National Bagasse in Vachery. Before retiring in 1982, he had worked for St. Regis for 15 years. He had lived in Magnolia since 1949. Active in sports most of his wife, he played baseball, football and basketball as a youth and was an avid support of the Dairy Belt Little League. He managed a team in the Babe Rugth League in McComb in 1957 and was an assistant coach for Dixie Youth baseball teams in Magnolia in the 1980s. Survivors include his wife, Clara Scafidel of Magnolia; four sons, Bobby of Vicksburg, Jimmy of Jackson, Jerry of Lafayette and Ritchie of Baton Rouge; brothers, Elmore of Hammond and Charlie of LaPlace; a sister, Annie Rimes of Baton Rouge; five grand-children and 11 great- grandchildren. A sister, Mary May, and six brothers, Benjamin, Willie, Kelly, Russell, Tony and Ed Scafidel are among those who preceded him in death. Visitation will be at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb today from 3 to 7 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 11 a.m. The funeral will be held at East Union Baptist Church in Magnolia.
