Mary Zelia Baril Sabel, born July 6, 1917, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amelia Santanc Baril and Ernest Baril; her precious brother, Ernest Baril Jr.; and her beloved husband, Jerome Sabel. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Bankston (Mrs. Robert) Werling, of Hammond, Margaret Waters and her husband, Brenner, of Port Allen, and Mary Ellen "Elly" Harper and her husband, William, of Covington. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, David Bankston, Stephen Bankston, Laura Bankston Brown, Elizabeth Waters, Amy Waters, and Anne Harper-Andra and her husband, Jamie Andra; and great-grandchildren, Maggie Gentile, Matthew Gentile, Hailey Jo Brown, Grayson Andra and Gavin Andra. She was a resident of Jefferson until she recently relocated to Hammond. Mary's life was exemplified by her unlimited love, patience and her unswerving spiritual strength. She saw God's goodness in everyone she met and was loved by all who knew her. Mary was a lifelong member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, a former worthy matron of Jachin Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and a past Queen of Daughters of the Nile in New Orleans. She was very active in philanthropic activities of the Shrine and Masonic families through her late husband, Jerome. Mary was a creative and amazing person who lived by the Golden Rule, and always looked for the best in others, and was rarely disappointed. During her lifetime, she loved sewing, boating, fishing, traveling, painting and playing music. She was a devoted mother and granny who will be greatly missed and remain highly admired and devotedly loved. Visitation at Schoen Funeral Home, 3824 Canal St., New Orleans, on Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. until memorial service at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.
