She was a native of Roseland. She is survived by four daughters, Emily Lampton and Erica Hughes, both of Roseland, Latonia Acevedo of Fort Polk and Tammy Williams of Amite; two sisters, Emily Brumfield of Roseland and Trudy Wessxx of Independence; one son, Grover Maxwell of Bogalusa; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hughes; her husband, David Lee Houston; and one brother, Joseph Hughes. She was born on Tuesday, July 19, 1960, in Baton Rouge, daughter of the late Charles and Beverly Fussell Easley. She graduated as valedictorian of Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond with a master's degree in speech pathology. She also received a law degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. Mrs. Houston taught speech in the Tangipahoa Parish school system for more than 25 years. Surviving are her husband, John H. Houston Jr.; son, John DeGruy; stepson, John Henry Houston III; stepdaughter, Lucy Houston; four grandchildren, Alyssa DeGruy, Whitney Woodruff, Bryan Woodruff and Haleigh Pelligran; sister, Sharon Irby; and a cousin, Gene Irby. Friends will be received at Harry McKneely Funeral Home in Ponchatoula on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8:30 a.m. until chapel services at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Johnny Hernandez officiating. Interment will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery in Ponchatoula.
