She was native of Kentwood, a taxi cab driver with Maxine's Cab Service, former employee of Charity Hospital, New Orleans, a member of Historic St. James AME and served on the Steward Board, Lucy B. Perkins Women's Missionary Society and Sanctuary Choir. Survivors include her father, Pinkney E. James Sr.; daughter, Kim Coston Smith; four sons, Herbert A. Jr., Patrick D., Juan C. and Werner J. V. Coston; brother, Pinkney E. James Jr.; and nine grandchildren. Her husband, Herbert A. Coston Sr.; and mother, Rosa James, preceded her in death. Visitation will be at Historic St. James AME, New Orleans, today from 4 p.m. until the funeral at 6 p.m. The Rev. Martin D. Odom will conduct the service. Dismissal will be Friday at Big Creek AME Church, Kentwood, and burial will be in Big Creek Cemetery. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 1/8/2003 COSTON-McGARY, SHIRLEY Independence - Shirley Coston-McGary, 63, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. She was a native of Independence and a nursing assistant. She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Crosby, Donna Fay Coston and Helen Ford, all of Independence three sons, Edward Coston of Independence and Kelvin and Christopher Coston, both of Hammond; three sisters, Ernestine Kinchen and Bessie Showers, both of Albany, and Beverly Ledbetter of Independence; five brothers, Fredrick Kelly of Independence, Joe Kelly of LaPlace, Jim Kelly of Lufkin, Texas; Ellis Kelly Jr. of Detroit and Burnell Kelly of Oklahoma; 19 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Vernon Kelly Sr.; brother, Frank Kelly; her first husband, Edward Coston; and her second husband, Huey McGary. Visitation will be Thursday at Richardson Funeral Home, Hammond, from 2 to 5 p.m. The wake will be Thursday at Macedonia Free Will Missionary Baptist Church at 7 p.m. The Rev. Johnny Milton will conduct the funeral Friday at the church at noon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. ***************************************************************************
