He is survived by his beloved wife and soul mate of more than 55 years, Margaret Catherine Weber Bastian, father and Papa John to six loving children and 18 grandchildren: son Robert John Bastian, wife Glenda Susan, children Robert John, Jr., Christopher Bernard, Jonathan Bostick, and Curtis Bostick; daughter Mary Catherine Bastian Harrington, husband Mark Richard, children Christine Renee and Keith Richard; son Michael John Bastian, wife Jill Louise, children Jeremy Michael, Jessica Michelle, Jason Connor, and Jonathan Christopher; daughter Mary Patricia Bastian and "Odin" Valhalla; Susanne Marie Marco, husband Christopher Neil, children Madison Catherine, Christopher Jordan, Julia Marie, and John Anthony; and son John Aloysius Bastian, IV, wife Amy Maureen, children Sean Lyons, Brendan Aloysius, Matthew Ryan, and Colin Patrick. John valued education. He attended Incarnate Word Elementary School and recently enjoyed attending 60th anniversary. He graduated from St. Paul's High School in New Orleans in 1945. He earned 5 college degrees including a Master in Psychology and Guidance and a post Master's Degree in counseling. His credentials include Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. John retired from the United States Army after 34 years of service. During his work as a Hospital Administrator in the Medical Service Corps, he was stationed at Fort Sill and Norman, Oklahoma; Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Augsburg, Germany; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Valley Forge, Pennsylvania; Seoul, Korea; and Fort McPherson, Georgia. He retired from the Army in 1982 and then resided in Corpus Christi, New Orleans and San Antonio. In his post-Army years he worked for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Boeing Aircraft, State Correctional Facility in Kyle, and at Roosevelt and Lee High School. As STAN Counselor for the North East Independent School District, he earned respect and gratitude from countless students and their families for the insight and guidance he provided them. John was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where he served as an usher. Besides his family, friends, colleagues, and STAN students, John's interest included dogs, military history, photography, gardening, especially growing mighty oaks from tiny acorns, aviation, mechanics, and collecting coins, stamps, and antique toys. He was known for his sense of humor. He was an expert at bantering and it took a quick mind to keep up with him. He was devoted in his counseling work and cared deeply about the people in his life and the issues they faced. John was a life-long devout Roman Catholic and believed in the power of prayer. He welcomed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His faith sustained him throughout his life and carried him to everlasting life in Heaven.
