On Saturday night between 10 and 11 o’clock D.N. Lee left F.N. Abell’s store for his home. He was accompanied by his brother John Lee, and Purvis Roberts. Roberts left the two Lees upon reaching the road leading to his home. John Lee lives about a mile this side of deceased and upon reaching the House invited his brother to alight. The invitation Dave refused and proceeded on his way home. This was the last ever seen of Dave Lee alive. On Sunday afternoon his horse came home with the bridle over the pommel of the saddle. The neighbors were sent for and a search instituted for the missing man. On Monday morning his body was found hanged to a tree about ¾ mile from his residence on the Brake road, distant about 4 or 5 miles from Holly Grove Church. In the dead man’s pocket was found a card upon which was written: “Lee is dead, hog meat killed him; boys, go slow on hogs.” The body was cut down and carried to the house and Esquire Dobyn sent for. He summoned a Jury, and they returned a verdict to the effect “that D.N. Lee came to his death on the 1882, by hanging perpetrated by unknown parties.” Great indignation prevails in the Holly Grove neighborhood and the parish generally at the dastardly deed. Deceased was a young man born and raised in the parish. He leaves a wife and child to deplore his untimely end. What Lee’s standing in the community was, we are unable to say, but the evidence of the neighbors who went to his house to sit up with the corpse conclusively proves that there was not a pound of meat of any kind on the premises, food for the guests being provided by a friend of the family. P.S. – A posse of men under the sheriff left town at 9 this morning to arrest certain parties supposed to be implicated in the hanging. – Franklin Sun.
