Childress, age 85 of Grayson will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 14, 2004 from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Jimmy Goodman and Rev. Keith Thomas officiating. Interment will military honors will follow in the Old Bethel Cemetery west of Clarks. Mr. Childress was born in Kelly, La. on February 5, 1919 to the union of Robert F. "Bob" and Gracie Fitzgerald Childress and died Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at the Northeast La. War Veterans Home in Monroe. He was a retired rural mail carrier and a veteran of World War II. He entered the service in 1940 and was discharged in 1945. He served in the 45th Infantry Signal Corps having extensive combat time in Cicely, North Africa, Southern France and Salerno, Italy. He also received the Purple Heart. He was also a member of the Old Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: DeVonne Moore Childress, his brothers: an infant and Melvis Childress and his sister: Virginia C. McDaniel. Survivors include his son: Russell Childress of Coco Beach, Fl., his daughters and sons-in-law: June and John Reitzell of Grayson, Judy and Billy Mann of West Monroe, his special friend: Vertie Moore, and good friend: Blanche Gibson. his brothers: Gerald Childress of Grayson, Carl Childress of Calhoun and Kenneth Childress of Kelly, his sister: Bobbie Grace Rowe of Dallas, his grandchildren: Dawn Shellshear of Spring, Tx., Joan Richmond of Lafayette, John Reitzell, Jr. of Grayson, Monica Mann of Monroe, Chrystal Woodcum of Florida and Luke Childress of Florida and eleven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be David Richmond, Keith Childress, Reggie McDaniel, Tony Childress, Randy Childress and Lavelle Dollar. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. until time of services at Riser Funeral Home, Hwy 165, Columbia.
