Derrick. Richard E. DERRICK, was born near Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1826, and grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birth. He resided for a time at Rochester, Indiana where he was married to Mrs. Ruth BRISTOL, Feb. 14, 1853. Mr. Derrick came to Washington county, Kansas in 1860. Soon after homesteading the Derrick farm near Hollenberg the patent for the place was issued over the signature of President Grant. Mr. Derrick has not only held the farm but continued to run it up to the time of his wife's death which occured May 4, 1899. John Derrick of Perkins, Oklahoma, Mrs. M.O. COLEMAN, Manhattan, and Mrs. Ella WILSON are his surviving children, three having died in early childhood. Mrs. James MOREY died at Lonemound in 1893. A number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren are found in the list of descendants. Mr. Derrick made his home with his son-in-law H.R. WILSON at Emmons, but died while visiting his son-in-law Asa COLEMAN. He reached the advanced age of 82 years, 11 months and 2 days. James ELLIOT, his father-in-law organized a Methodist class and Sunday school on the Blue soon after their arrival, eight of the children and Mr. Derrick were members of the class. He was practically a life long member of the church, a man of sterling integrity, noted for his sympathy and hospitality. His good name is honorable to all who knew him. His funeral was held from the Hollenberg Methodist church Sunday, Sept. 26, 1909 in charge of Rev. J.W. R. CLARDY.
