Fay FORTNEY died at the home of W.A. HAMILTON, Wednesday afternoon, March 10, at 3 o'clock. Interment was made in Pleasant View cemetery, Thursday afternoon. The illness of Fay Fortney began at Dodge City and dates from about the first of last June, when he was attacked with severe pains in his abdomen. He came to Oskaloosa and after consulting local physicians went to the Santa Fe hospital at Topeka, where in September he was operated on, a tumorous growth the size of a coconut being removed. He recovered quickly from the operation and his health seemed restored, gaining in weight 15 pounds in a short time. He returned to Dodge and to his work, but his recovery was only temporary. In the latter part of January he was seized with vomiting spells and at once came to Oskaloosa and upon advice went again to the Santa Fe hospital. After an examination by the hospital physicians it was decided that another operation was necessary. The operation revealed the fact that the growth was adherent and could not be removed. The incision was then closed. Upon his own request and the statement of the physicians that he could hardly survived for 48 hours he was on February 25th brought to Oskaloosa. Undert the anti-toxin treatment he gained for a little while, and one last Friday hopes were entertained of at least a temporary recorvery. On Sunday he developed diphtheria in its most virulent form, and it only became a question of a few hours as the larnyx had completely closed. He lingered until 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when death came to relieve him of his suffering. On account of the family being quarantined a public funeral was dispensed with. A few of his closest friends gathered at the cemetery under a winter sky, to do him the last office of kindness. Many and beautiful were the blossoms that graced his coffin.--Independent. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.org/ks/jefferson/obits/f/fortney1020gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
