Mrs. Burke Dead.
Matilda BURKE, wife of John A. Burke, died at her home in the third ward on
Wednesday, July 9th, at 9:30 a.m. Her death was not unexpected as she had been
in failing health for some time. All that medical skill and loving attendance
could do proved of no avail so at last the enfeebled body gave up the unequal
contest.
The deceased was 65 years, 7 months and nine days old at the time of her death.
She came to this community when a young woman and practically all of the
remainder of her life has been spent in this community. She witnessed the
gradual transition of Harper county from a bleak prairie to the prosperous
improved and cultivated community it is today.
She was endowed with the attribute that make the loving wife and mother and was
zealous to do her part either in the home or community. She was a member of the
Catholic church and lived the consistent Christian life. Her departure will give
deep sorrow to many friends here and especially to those who knew her in the
early days--two score years ago.
She is survived by her husband, five sons and two daughters, all of whom except
one daughter reside in this community. She also leaves two brothers, Wm. and
Joseph McINTOSH of Danville and other relatives at a distance.
The funeral services will be held at the Catholic church at Danville tomorrow at
10:30 a.m. after which interment will be made in the cemetery at that place.
