The beautiful subdivisions of Ridgewood, Valley Heights, Sunnyside, and Lawndale have built up like magic, and have added to the city, and others are being laid out and are building up rapidly, Munroe's Kelly's Paige's Laughran's, Walsh's, and other subdivisions all adding to the growth, wealth, and business prosperity of this growing city. Over a dozen new business blocks have been erected in the past six months, and a number are either projected or are in the process of construction, and it would be a large task to count the splendid new houses built in the recent past and being built now. Several new school buildings have had to be built, and several more have been provided for to make room for the wonderful growth of the school populations. One of the most needed of Joliet's improvements for years has been a sewage system. This she has never had and the tremendous growth without the drainage, annually causes the prevalence of typhoid and other zymotic diseases to such an extent that the people last spring demanded a general cleaning out and the establishment of a thorough drainage system. A stream branches down from the penitentiary through the rolling-mills, draining both, and goes through the center of the city, and has always been an open, sluggish stream for everybody to drain into. It became a nuisance, and by a generous appropriation it is now being converted into the main trunk sewer of a general drainage system for the city at a heavy cost under the supervision of ex-Alderman M. Moran, who, with a large force of men, is widening, deepening, and covering it the entire length of the city. When this great improvement is completed, with her paved streets, electric railway, new schools, new churches, new businesses, and wonderful growth generally, Joliet will be able to challenge any city in the United States as a rapidly growing place and a generally desirable place to reside in. The street electric railway is being rapidly extended toward Lockport by J. A. Henry, and the city is spreading out on all sides. The principal social event of the week was the marriage of City Attorney, John W. Downey to Miss Mamie Kavanaugh. The bride and groom are both popular and prominent young members of society. They are now on a wedding tour South. Joliet is to have another new factory, the Homans-Elrick Steam Binder Co. Capital, $30,000.
