Col.) Joseph Graves, U.S. Army (retired), 71, of Gig Harbor, Wash., Formerly of Rock Island, will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. The Very Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C, D.D., Bishop of the Peoria Diocese, will be Celebrant. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a Christian wake service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday. Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Clergy Aid, Inc. Diocese of Peoria. Father Graves died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Cottesmore of Lifecare, Gig Harbor. Father Graves was born Nov. 5, 1931, in Rock Island, the son of Samuel and Rosalie Baur Graves. He graduated from the former St. Joseph Grade and High Schools, Rock Island, and from St. Bede College, Peru, Ill. He completed studies for the priesthood at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained a priest for the Peoria Diocese by Bishop William E. Cousins, May 27, 1956, at St. Mary's Cathedral, Peoria. Father Graves served as an assistant at Immaculate Conception Parish, Monmouth, Ill., from 1956-1959, and as an assistant at St. John's Parish, Peoria, from 1959-1963, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Army with the rank of Lt. Col in 1986. From 1991 to 2001, he assisted at various parishes in the Colorado Springs Diocese. Father Graves went on Senior Priest status in 2002. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include a brother, Francis Edward Graves, Ukiah, Calif,; sisters Catherine Therese Dahl, Oakdale, Calif., Delores Jean Ransom, Los Gatos, Calif., Patricia A. Green, Pocahontas, Ariz., and Roberta Joan White, Gig Harbor; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Rosalie Cross, his parents, a niece and several nephews.
