Obituary of Mary Melissa Sides-Gage - Montgomery County, Illinois The following obit is Olin Clayton's paternal great, great grandmother Mary Melissa (Sides) Gage. "FREE-PRESS GAZETTE" Mrs. William Gage aged 72 years and a life long resident of Nokomis and vicinity, passed away at her home, 109 S. Vine Street, Nokomis, Il shortly after noon Sunday, July 13, 1930. Mrs. Gage had been in ill health several years following a paralytic stroke, but was not confined to her home all of the time and at intervals she and her aged husband had spent considerable time in the home of their daughter, Mrs. W.F. Hulbert, at Nokomis, when Mrs. Gage was unable to attend to her household affairs. Home ties were strong, however and she preferred to be in her own home when at all able to take care of herself. Mary Melissa Gage was a daughter of the late Matthias and Sarah (Bost) Sides, who were among the early settlers of the Nokomis community. She was born at Nokomis September 27, 1858 and her entire life was spent in the vicinity of Nokomis. She counted among her friends a number of the oldest residents of the community who were young people during her youth. On October 27, 1878 she was united in marriage with William M. Gage, who conducted a mercantile business in Nokomis for a period of time, several years ago. Later he followed the trade of carpenter and was an expert cabinet worker and finisher until his health became impaired that he could no longer work at the trade. "LEAVES TWO CHILDREN" Mr and Mrs. Gage were the parents of four children, two of whom, Mrs. Warren F. Hulbert of Nokomis and Elmer Gage of Desoto, Missouri with their father survive. A daughter Suavilla Edna died in infancy and a son Curtis aged 17 years, was drowned near Nokomis on July 3, 1911. Other surviving relatives include seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Laura Raymer of St. Louis and Mrs.James Marshall of Litchfield, two brothers, D. E. Sides of Colorado Springs, Colo and Emerson Sides of Granite City, Il and a number of other relatives. The following brothers and sisters who preceeded Mrs. Gage in death were all former residents of the community and will be remembered by many of our readers: Mrs. George Robertson, Mrs. J.W. Deal, Mrs. A.D. Kerr, Emanuel Sides, Adolphus Sides and William Sides. Mrs. Gage was a member of the Baptist Church in Nokomis for 33 years and a faithful attendant while her health permitted. She was also a member of the W.C.T.U. for a number of years and never did she lose interest in its affairs. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 2:00 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, the Reverand J.W. Smith of Jerseyville, Il a former pastor of the church, officiating. Hymns used were "Home of the Soul" and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought". The casket bearers were grandsons and nephews of the deceased, Lloyd Hulbert of Nokomis, Everett Hulbert of Battle Creek, Michigan, Leo Clayton of Witt, Homer L. Ponder of St. Louis and Jesse and Lester Robertson of Nokomis. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. H.L. Ponder and the Misses Edna and Ida May Hulbert and Dorothy Evans. Interment was made in the Nokomis Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
