Murphysboro, IL March 27, 1925 Storm deaths reported to the casualty committee here as occurring overnight are: Mrs. Louise HUMPHREY, Murphysboro, in St. Andrew's hospital, died early today Mrs. Louise THIS, 88, Lorraine and Isabelle THIS, children, Murphysboro Mrs. Beulah THORNTON, wife of Offa, this city, died in St. Louis hospital. Mrs. L. W. BROWN, Gorham, wife of Prof. BROWN of the Gorham schools, died in Cairo hospital early Thursday. The Jackson county death list compiled from casualties in the storm belt from Big Lake bitch below Gorham to the county line north east of DeSoto today stood at: Murphysboro, 215 DeSoto, 57 Gorham, 31 Rural District, 23 Or a total of 325 Additional Comments: Widely considered the most devastating and powerful tornado in American history, the Great Tri-State Tornado ripped through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925. In its 219-mile-long wake it left four completely destroyed towns, six severely damaged ones, 15,000 destroyed homes, and 2,000 injured. Most significantly, 695 people were killed, a record for a single tornado.
