THE PALESTINE REPORTER Tuesday July 6, 1897 SPEED WILSON DEAD HIS BODY FOUND IN THE ARKANSAS RIVER AT PUEBLO COL., JUNE 29TH The Cause Of His Death a Mystery From the Pueblo, Col. Daily Chieftain we glean the following facts in the death of J. Speed Wilson a Palestine boy, but for the past eighteen years a resident of Pueblo, Col. At about 4 o'clock on the after noon of June 29th, the body of a man was found in the Arkansas River just South of Pueblo. The body was taken to the morgue and upon identification proved to be that of Speed Wilson. He left his room at 8 o'clock Monday night and as his watch was stopped at 9:15, it is probable he met his death soon afterwards. Just how he met his death is a mystery. There are several scalp wounds on the head and the skin is broken on the chin and forehead. Speed was born here in 1857 and grew up to manhood here and has many relatives and acquaintance and friends here who will feel sad to hear of his death. He was a member of the "Elks" lodge and the funeral was held under the auspices of that organization.
