News Article, Child Found Dead, Eva ROLLA, Calhoun County, IL Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Chris Baselice Eva Rolla, daughter of Peter and Caroline Rolla was born ca. 1864 in IL. She dies in June of 1878 in Calhoun County. He story appeared in a White Hall, IL newpaper article, "Reflections for the files; June 1878" FOUND DEAD: On the 15th, inst. Peter Rolla, who resides in the Northern part of Calhoun County, sent his dauther aged some 13 years to the woods near the house to find and drive home the cow. The child, though subject to fits, has been accustomed to this service, but as the hours passed and she failed to return, the parents became alarmed and instituted a search for her. The day and night passed away, but no trace of the lost girl could be discovered. Neighbors left their work and joined in the search until some 300 people were engaged scouring the woods, exploring the valleys, peering into crevices, in the rocks and deep gullies worn out by the hill torrents, but without avail. For more than a week the almost distracted parents and sympathizing neighbors continued the wearisome and tiresome search until hope died within. Finally last Sunday, nine days after the child disappeared, her body was found near the mouth of Bee Creek. Some think she was enticed away or abducted by roce to this place where she was found outraged and killed. Others entertain the theory that she wandered to this spot and then died in a fit. Every effort will be made to arrive at the truth and should the first theory prove to be a true one, justice terrible, swift and sure will overtake the villains if they are discovered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations or persons.
