Stewart, 73 Melvin D. Stewart, 73, Coeur d'Alene, passed away on Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, in his home. He was surrounded by his loving family, his dog, Annie, and a 10- year-old, 21-inch Magnavox TV with basic cable. He was born to Celie Stewart and Goldie (McDonald) Stewart on July 30, 1932, in Glendale, Calif. Mel married Roberta (Covey Snider) in October 1953 and began populating his small environment with handsome underachievers who would share his flair for inappropriate humor and choosing the wrong place and time to exhibit it. Mel worked as a police detective for 20 years in Southern California before moving his family to Idaho in 1974. He continued working in law enforcement for a short time before retiring. He enjoyed golf, old detective shows and playing practical jokes on family and friends. He also loved animals. He is survived by his wife, Roberta and their four children; Judy Dean and Chris Stewart of Coeur d'Alene, Matt Stewart of Temecula, Calif., and Katy Hipke of Boise; as well as numerous adoring grandchildren. We thought he was kidding until the very end. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, is in charge of cremation.
