Edmunds, 88, Beaverton, Ore., formerly of Coeur d'Alene, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, in Portland. Born Dec. 16, 1916, in Waukegan, Ill., to Daniel A. and Elma O. (Ashman) Edmunds, Merrill was raised on the south side of Chicago. Following his graduation from high school, he attended Iowa State University and graduated with a bachelor of science in forestry. On June 19, 1943, Merrill married Marie Hayes. They spent their honeymoon in the Bitterroot Valley in Montana and never returned to Illinois. In the mid-1940s, they settled in Polson, Mont., where Merrill owned and operated a fuel company and also served on the city council. In 1957, he went to work for the U.S. Customs Service as an inspector at Eastport, Idaho, and later, at Whitlash, Mont. While Merrill worked in Eastport, the family lived north of Bonners Ferry. In 1978, he retired from the Customs Service and moved with Marie to Coeur d'Alene. Merrill was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church of Coeur d'Alene and volunteered his time with the American Red Cross. He also enjoyed fishing with his grandson, knitting and tatting. Merrill had just moved this past May to Beaverton, Ore. He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Edmunds of Beaverton, daughter and son- in-law, Elaine and Barry Williams, Missoula, Mont.; and grandson Nathan Williams, Missoula. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Aug. 22 at First Presbyterian Church, Coeur d'Alene, 521 East Lakeside. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
