The numbers written by J. F. Smith, one of the two Enumerators, were very difficult to interpret so it is highly recommended that the user verify the age data found in this transcription. The columns in which reading and writing ability were tabulated contain many entries that appear crossed out or checked off and the tabulations at the bottoms of the columns are much lower than the apparent number of entries. Users wanting to know whether their ancestors were literate or not should refer to the original microfilm to draw their own conclusion. Surname errors Errors were occasionally made by the enumerators who would fail to carry a surname forward when there was an intervening change of surname in a dwelling, by reversing surname and given name, or by phonetic spelling. Some of these errors are known and some are suspected. Surnames that are or may be grossly out of order in the index are: Bollings - look under Rollings Dixon - look under Sarah Evans - look under Ivens, Ivins, or Ivons Eyerly - look under Irely Finney - look under Lorenzo Hanner - look under Solomon Kale - look under Reuben Mailer - look under Masler McClellan - look under Ralph Robinson - look under Rulinson Roseman - look under Shera Wells - look under Harison Kent G.
