Users of this transcription of the 1860 Madison County, Iowa Federal census should 
be cautioned to refer to microfilm or CD ROM reproductions of the original census 
forms to verify and make their own interpretations of the data.  L. B. Hughes, 
census enumerator, used phonetic spelling throughout his effort and the resulting 
errors have been faithfully transcribed to the best of our ability.  Additional 
problems were created by Mr. Hughes' handwriting style.  Names containing the letters 
"m, n, u, i, e, a, and o", especially when any of those letters were adjacent, were 
often very difficult to interpret.  Finally, Mr. Hughes' numerals "0", "6", and "8" 
were often indistinguishable, especially as the second number in a two digit age entry.
