Colfax; born in Nicholas Co., Ky. in 1820; came to Polk Co., Iowa in 1850; thence to Jasper Co. in April 1854. Has 445 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. Married Miss Nancy N. CLINE in 1840. She was born in Bourbon Co., Ky., April 11, 1821, died in April 1865, leaving six children - Margaret J., John A., Milton W., George, Martin and Ella. Then married Mrs. Caroline VANHOOK in 1867. She was born in Canada in 1836. They have four children - Frankie, Savannah, Minnie and Anna. Republican. Has held the office of School Director eight years. Came to Polk Co. in a wagon; had but fifty cents on arriving there, with which he bought corn meal and potatoes for the family. Had a land warrant, which he exchanged for a farm; then improved that somewhat, and sold and came to Jasper Co. and started again; plowed the first furrow and split the first rails in this vicinity; made, hauled out and laid up 5,500 rails in one year; has one of the finest orchards in this vicinity, 440 trees, planted in 1868; formerly owned 380 acres where Colfax now stands. His oldest son, John, is now practicing medicine at Clyde, Iowa. ROGERS, S. A.; Farmer; Sec. 6; P. O. Greencastle. RUMBAUGH, Geo. W.; Farmer; Sec. 14; P. O. Greencastle; born in 1826; came to Jasper Co. in 1856. Has 314 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. Married Miss Caracy MUMBAUGH in 1846. She was born in Fairfield Co., Ohio in 1824. They have eight children - Festus W., Alonzo L., V. P., Arabel, Sarah V., Lincoln H., Charles M. and Josie M. Republican. Has held the office of Township Trustee three terms. Mr. and Mrs. R. and their two oldest daughters are members of the Evangelical Association, and they, as well as all the family, are members of the Sons of Temperance. RUMMELL, M. Greencastle; born in Sullivan Co., East Tenn. in 1813; came to Logan Co., Ill. in 1833; thence to Jasper Co. in 1853. Has 163 acres of land, valued at $60 per acre. Married Miss Mary VANDEVANDER in 1834. She was born in Virginia in 1815, died in 1851, leaving three children - David E., Margaret and Sarah (who died July 1869). Then married Mrs. Eveline HILTON in 1852. She was born in East Tennessee in 1824. They have four children - Alford L., Emily, Alice B. and Frances M. Democrat. Has held the office of Township Trustee for several years, School Director. He is a member of the Christian Church since 21 years of age; she is a Methodist. Mr. SAMS has had 620 acres of land here; helped his children to farms until he has but the above-named left; has a fine orchard of 500 trees, pears and cherries; over fifty Early Richmond. He married Ann Eliza PARKS in 1854. She was born in Noble Co., Ind., Oct. 2, 1836; died May 10, 1856, leaving one child - Louis C., born in November 1854. He then married Mary C. PEASE June 4, 1866. She was born in Mansfield, Ohio in 1832. They have two children - Hugh P. and Eddie S. Formerly a Whig, and since the organization of the Republican party, a Republican. Has held the offices of County Clerk and Surveyor tow full terms, Justice of the Peace and Assessor four terms. Is a member of the A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 59, Newton. Enlisted in the 40th I. V. I. in 1862; sent home on recruiting service; spent the first Winter at Columbus, Ky., thence to Paducah, Ky., thence to Starstin on the Yazoo River, thence to Hanes' Bluff and Snyder's Bluff; after the fall of Vicksburg on Reserve; thence to Arkansas; participated in the taking of Little Rock, was the first to cross the river on pontoon Oct. 10, 1863; was sent home on the last of November of the same year on recruiting service; remained one month and was sent to Davenport, Iowa; was kept on duty at recruiting camp until April 1, following, and returned to the regiment; mustered out at Davenport, Iowa in 1864. Mrs. TURNER's father, Andrew PEASE, belonged to Co. I, 37th Iowa Graybeard Vols.; mustered in Dec. 15, 1862; died Jan. 10, 1862, guarding prisoners at Alton, Ill.* [*Transcriber's note: The date of his death is BEFORE the date he was mustered in. Mr. W. is a Republican; is a member of the Evangelical Association; also Sons of Temperance. Holds the office of Township Clerk. Enlisted in Co. B, 14th I. V. I. in October 1861; participated in battles of Pittsburg Landing, 1st and 2nd Corinth, siege of Vicksburg, Atlanta, Sherman's march to the sea, and Bentonville; was mustered out at Louisville, Ky. in 1865. Owns one-half interest in store and goods; his residence is in Greencastle; has a farm of 100 acres in this township. Marris Miss Carrie MILLINGER in 1866. She was born in Lancaster CO., Penn. in 1844. They have one child - Howard, born in 1867. Republican; members of the U. B. Church. Enlisted in the 214th Penn. V. I. in March 1865; kept on guard duty until mustered out in 1866. WITMER, J. R.; Farmer. WOODS, J. A.; Farmer; Sec. 3; P. O. Mitchellville. WOODS, H.; Laborer, Greencastle. WRIGHT, S. H.; Farmer and Stock Grower and Dealer; Sec. 25; P. O. Colfax; born in Ontario Co., N. Y. in 1817; moved to La Grange Co., Ind. in 1836, thence to this county in May 1855. Owns 320 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Married Elizabeth TONE in 1841. She was born in Cayuga Co., N. Y. in 1822. She died in Indiana in 1844. In 1857, he married Miss Sarah NEWHOUSE; born in Hocking Co., Ohio in 1829. They have four children - Mary, Samuel E., Minerva and Sedgwick. Mr. W. is Independent in politics. Was School Director for fifteen years; is now School Treasurer, also Township Trustee. Mrs. W. is a member of the M. E. Church. He came here for the purpose of growing stock, to which he devoted his whole attention, feeding from 100 to 150 head of bullocks, and double that number of hogs per year; he is the pioneer stock feeder of Iowa.
