Nellist FERDINAND J. LINDEMAN, Merchant. Beginning his business life as a bookkeeper for a wholesale grocery firm in Cincinnati, O., in 1886, Ferdinand J. Lindeman has since been engaged in merchandise lines and is now manager of The Liberty House, the largest department store in Hawaii. In 1888, when a lad of seventeen, Mr. Lindeman went to California, where he accepted a position with the J. J. Phister Knitting Co. For six years he traveled for this firm, covering the state of California. There followed an interval of wandering during which he visited Alaska, and prospected in the high Sierras of California. In 1899 he came to Hawaii and entered the employ of the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. He remained with this company until 1903, when he joined H. Hackfeld & Co., Ltd., as traveling salesman. This position he held until 1917, when he was made manager of the drygoods department of that company; and in January, 1918, he was appointed manager of The Liberty House, controlled by the American Factors, successors to H. Hackfeld & Co., Ltd. During the six years that Mr. Lindeman has directed The Liberty House its business has increased to such an extent that it has become necessary to take over the adjoining Odd Fellows building to accommodate its growth. He has served as president of the Retail Board, and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Commercial and Rotary Clubs. He was born in New York City, Jan. 2, 1871, the son of Ferdinand and Theresa Edith (Travenier) Lindeman. His education was received at St. Xavier’s College, Cincinnati, O. In 1900 he married Agnes J. Colman. They have three children, Theone, Adele and Philip.
