GEORGE R. HUMPHREY, Business Executive. In 1908, when he was acting as a 
special agent for the Northern Assurance CO., traveling out of San Francisco 
over a large territory, George R. Humphrey was named by the Board of 
Underwriters of the Pacific to come to Honolulu and organize the underwriting 
department for the von Hamm-Young Co., Ltd.
  He accepted, and for three years proceeded to develop the department, when 
he was transferred to the automobile branch of the extensive von Hamm-Young 
enterprises. Six years later he was in Hilo as manager of the business there, 
and in 1918 he returned to Honolulu to manage a new automobile firm, the 
American-Hawaiian Motors Co., Ltd., which had been organized but two years 
before. In 1921 Mr. Humphrey was made treasurer and director of the rapidly 
expanding concern.
  Mr. Humphrey’s business career began in San Francisco. In 1899 he started as 
a junior clerk with the Hartford Fire Insurance Co., and remained with the 
firm until the fire of 1906, when he assisted in adjusting fire losses for 
more than a year. He was also a special agent for the London Assurance 
Corporation in California. During the San Francisco fire he served as a 
volunteer in the citizens’ guard.
  Born in Middleburgh, New York, March 3, 1884, Mr. Humphrey was the son of 
Vivian Arlington and Clara Belle (Stahl) Humphrey and a grandson of the 
distinguished Judge Philip Couchman Humphrey of New York, a veteran of the 
Civil War. Mr. Humphrey’s education was obtained in the public schools of San 
Francisco.
