Nellist BEN HOLLINGER, Supervisor and Merchant. First elected to public office when only 25 years of age, Ben Hollinger, supervisor and Honolulu business man, has the distinction of being the youngest man ever elected to the city and county board of supervisors. For the past ten years, although he has devoted much of his time to public service, he has also developed his interests in various business enterprises. He has served continuously since 1914 as a supervisor and at present is senior member of the board. He has aided in numerous civic improvements, chief among these being the establishment of the first public playground in Honolulu, the public zoo, and the reorganization of the city water works department. During the past few years he has been active in devising methods to place city departments on more efficient and economical operating basis. In business life, Mr. Hollinger is president and general manager of the Honolulu Rubber Works, Ltd., organized in 1911, and is president of Ben Hollinger & Co., Ltd. In 1906, Mr. Hollinger went to work as a clerk for the firm of Lord & Belser, contractors, and held a similar position with the Honolulu Construction & Draying Co., Ltd., from 1908 to 1918, when he entered business for himself, purchasing an interest in the Honolulu Rubber Works, Ltd. He is chairman of the finance committee of the board of supervisors and has served as a member of the parks, playgrounds, public buildings, civil service and other committees. Born in Honolulu, April 15, 1889, Mr. Hollinger is the son of the late Thomas Hollinger, who came to Hawaii in 1884 from Ontario, Canada. The elder Hollinger was a farrier in Honolulu for many years, and died here in 1922 after a continuous residence of almost forty years. Mr. Hollinger was educated at St. Louis College. He married Louise Bushnell, Sept. 14, 1910, and they have three children, Louise Mae, Ben. Jr., and Stephanie Carol Hollinger. Mr. Hollinger is a member of the Commercial, Phoenix, Rotary and Automobile Clubs, St. Louis College Alumnae, and the Chamber of Commerce.
