He married Lucretia Peacock, who was born about 1813 in Georgia. Nothing is known concerning Lucretia’s family. Levin and Lucretia had twelve children - Catherine, Sarah Ann, George Washington, William, Mary Ann, Nancy, Nicy Ellen, John, Frances, Hettie, James Monroe, and Victoria Ruhanna. Levin and his family appear in the 1850 Marion County Census and he is listed as being a farmer. Levin’s parents along with his brother George’s family, his sister Nancy’s family, and Levin’s oldest daughter Catherine and her husband lived in this same area. In 1860 Levin sold a lot located in Taylor County, Ga. to his son William. It is thought by some researchers that he moved his family to Alabama during this time. I have not been able to locate him in the 1860 Census for Georgia or Alabama. Levin was too old at age 52 to enlist in the Civil War but did so anyway. I have located his service records, and they show he enlisted as a Private in Columbus, Ga. on May 9, 1862. The records state he was a substitute for a S. Rothschild. At that time, wealthy people could pay others to go and serve in their place. Levin served with Company F, 3rd Battalion, Hillard’s Legion, Alabama Volunteers. He appears on Company Muster Rolls from May 9, 1862 to September 1, 1863. He then appears on a Register of Soldiers who were killed in battle or died of wounds or disease. It states he died on October 24, 1863 in Atlanta. According to a Sexton’s Book for Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, there is an L. Lafield, (error in the spelling of his name). The record shows that he belonged to Co. F, 3rd Ala. and states he died at Empire House Hospital at Atlanta on 10/21/1863. There is a discrepancy with the death date compared to the date on the military records, but I feel this information is similar enough to believe that this is Levin’s grave. Lucretia, presented a claim for settlement for a deceased soldier on March 27, 1865. I don’t know why she waited so long to file this claim. So far, I have not located a widow’s pension for Lucretia nor discovered any records regarding her claim. The Layfield’s also had two sons who fought in the war. William and John enlisted as Privates on September 20, 1861 in Griffin, Ga. and were a part of Company F., 27th Regiment, Taylor Guards, Ga. Volunteer Infantry. William survived the war and surrendered at Greensboro, NC on April 26, 1865. He returned home to his family. John wasn’t so fortunate. He was injured at the Battle of Seven Pines, Va. on September 20, 1861 and died in the Fourth Georgia Hospital in Richmond, Va. on the 16th day of June 1862. John left behind a widow, Josephine. Levin’s widow Lucretia appears in the 1870 Census for Taylor County, Ga. She was listed as “Crency” Layfield. This must have been her nickname. Living with her at this time were her two youngest daughters, Hettie and Victoria. In the 1880 Taylor County, Ga. Census, Lucretia is 67 years old and living with her youngest daughter, Victoria who had recently married Jessie Rogers on July 31, 1879. I found no mention of Lucretia again in any records. There are six unmarked Layfield graves located at the Pine Level Cemetery in Taylor County, Ga. and I assume she is most likely buried there, since two of her children, Jim Layfield and Victoria Layfield Rogers are buried there. 1850 Marion County Census 57th Division Census taken on 8/23/1850 Page 227 and 228 #42 Josiah Layfield, 110 years old, male, born in MD Hetty, 65 years, female, born MD #44 Levin Layfield, 40 years, Farmer, Born Ga Lucretia, 38 years, Born Ga All children born in Ga Sarah Ann, 18 years Washington, 17 years, Laborer Wm, 15 years Mary Ann, 13 years Nancy, 10 years Nicy, 8 years John, 6 years Frances, 4 years Hetty, 2 years James, 1 year 1860 - no record of Levin and Lucretia in Taylor County or Marion County, Ga.
