Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, February 15, 1901 Smallpox In Pike Volney Smith, the 20 year old son of J.E. Smith, of near Hope, died Saturday of smallpox and was buried Saturday night very quietly. About three weeks ago a disease which was thought to be smallpox appeared in the family of Mr. Smith, but Dr. Graves, the attending physician, pronounced it something else and little attention was given it. Volney was the fifth member to be attacked with the dread disease, but the others have recovered. The family are kept under strict quarantine so there is but little danger of the disease spreading. There are other members of Mr. Smith’s family who have not been afflicted with the disease and may escape entirely. There seems to be none of the symptoms in any other family in the neighborhood.
