Henry Davis Drowned [This sad news transpired after some of our county papers had been mailed.] About half-past 5 o’clock, Tuesday evening, William Henry DAVIS, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. DAVIS, of this city, was drowned in Mr. W. B. LEE’S fish pond, near the Male Academy. It appears that he got off from the store of Messrs. LEE & PEEK, where he clerked, at 5 o’clock, and went immediately to the pond. He asked Ernest LEE to go in bathing with him, but Ernest declined. Wm Henry then went in and swam a little, while Ernest went to a melon patch just below the pond. In a few minutes he heard Wm. Henry call out, and he hurried back just in time to see young DAVIS disappear. He quickly secured a boat, but being not more than 15 years old could do nothing toward finding a body. He sent a negro to town at once on a mule and soon a crowd hurried to the pond. Messrs. Rogers DAVIS, John W. PEEK and Willie LEE went to work to find the body and the former located it, and assisted by Mr. PEEK and Mr. LEE it was drawn into the boat and carried to the bank. Dr.s A. C. PERRY and J. A. WRIGHT, assisted by others present, did all they could to restore him, but he was past the aid of human aid or effort. His father was in Atlanta and was summoned home by telegraph. When the news was communicated to his mother no pen could describe her anguish and sorrow. He was a noble young man, the pride and joy of his parents hearts, and his unfortunate death, in this community, and fell with crushing weight upon the hearts of all who loved him. His remains will be buried in the Covington Cemetery, this afternoon, Wednesday, August 10th.
