Sosebee reunion The Times of Gainesville, July 16, 1981 - Sybil McRay, Hall County Genealogist ................I have recently been asked to announce that there will be a Sosebee Family Reunion on the first Sunday in August. The meeting place is the Lloyd Strickland Foundation pavilion at Chestnut Mountain. Family photographs and documents will be on display. The program will be a business session at 9 a.m.; devotion at 10 a. m.; a musical at 11 a. m.; and lunch at noon. All Sosebee descendants are invited to this re-union. The Sosebees of North Georgia are descendants of Job Sosebee, born May 11, 1759, who served in the North Carolina militia during the Revolution. Job was married in October, 1785, in Spartanburg County, S. C., to Elizabeth Tankersley, born June 7, 1763. Job Sosebee died May 20, 1821, in Spartanburg County. Elizabeth, his wife, moved to Habersham County where she died sometime between 1840 and 1850. Names of residents of Habersham County who were entitled to draw land in the 1832 Gold Land Lottery lists Elizabeth Sosebee, widow; Samson, Solomon, Thomas and William Sosebee. I have also found the name spelled "Sosebeem" and "Soasby." Children of Job Sosebee and Elizabeth Tankersley Sosebee were: 1. Sampson Sosebee, born May 26, 1786, Spartanburg, S.C., died July, 1863. His will was probated in Banks County Ga. He married Elizabeth - in South Carolina and moved with his mother and relatives to Habersham County around 1830. 2. Mary "Polly" Sosebee was born Sept. 10, 1788, in Spartanburg, S.C. She never married. Polly died in Habersham County. 3. James Sosebee was born December 10, 1792, in Spartanburg, S.C. He was married to Polly Ann Wilson and evidently did not move to Georgia with other members of the family since he died in Spartanburg, S.C. 4. Thomas Sosebee was born Feb. 13, 1793, Spartanburg, S.C., and died in White County. He married Mary-. 5. William Sosebee was born May 18, 1795, Spartanburg, S.C., and died in Gilmer or Pickens County. He married Sarah-. 6. Issac Sosebee was born Sept. 1, 1797, Spartanburg, S.C. He married Nancy-. 6. Job Sosebee (Jr.) was born Nov. 13, 1799, Spartanburg, S.C. He was married Oct. 1848, in Habersham County to Sarah Cannon. His second wife was Amanda LeCrof. He died in 1886, Walker County, GA. 7. Suzannah Sosebee, born Mar. 28, 1802, Spartanburg, S.C., died unmarried, Habersham Co. 8. Abner Sosebee, born June 28, 1804, Spartanburg, S.C., married Melinda Payne; died in Franklin County, GA. 10. Elizabeth Sosebee, born Sept. 11, 1806, Spartanburg, S.C., died unmarried, Habersham Co. Much of the information in this article on the Sosebee family was furnished by Raymond Whelchel of Flowery Branch, Ga. 30542.
