This is one of the oldest Cemeteries in Savannah, Chatham County Georgia. It is located on Oglethorpe Street which is a main street that runs through the older section of the city. It starts close to the civic Center and leads toward Tybee Island. I can not remember the road it stops at but it is near Presidential Dr. The City cemetery opened about 1750 as records indicate and closed against burials about 1853. It was later turned into a city park in 1896. Today there are daily tours through the cemetery day and night. It remains a public park and landmark today. The cemetery went through a renovation project about 1969. Due to this restoration project there is no way of telling how many burials are actually in the cemetery. It appears that someone is still doing some work along. There are numerous headstones attached to a nearby wall which I am told once stood upon the grounds of the cemetery. There are no rocks or sunk in spot for unmarked burials all have been removed. There is a lot of open space between the burials which has led me to this decision and the fact it was close to use in 1853. The grounds are landscaped and maintained perfectly.
