Dear Sir: Enclosed find a petition signed by the members of Dickison Chapter U.D.C. for a pension to be granted Mrs. Blanche Whetstone. In regard to Mr. Whetstone’s service will say, after he was wounded and necessarily left on the field, he was taken prisoner by the enemy and taken to Fort Page 023 Delaware, where he contracted rheumatism. After his exchange, his father urged him to return home and finish his education and his father sent a substitute who was killed in fifteen days and William David Whetstone then returned to the Army and served until the close of the war and was parolled (sic) at Prattville, Alabama. It does seem strange that with all the data possible, & all requirements fulfilled that a pension to the wife of one who served so long and well (according to history) should be withheld. Mrs. Whetstone deserves this pension. I will write my friend Mr. E. L. Wartmann to call and possibly you both can assist in securing the pension, and your efforts will be duly appreciated. Very Respt. Mrs. Robert G. Blake Page 024 For Board October 18th, 1913 Mrs. Robert G. Blake, 720 East Fourth Street, Ocala, Florida. Dear Madam: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 14th. inst. enclosing a petition to the Board of Pensions in regard to the case of Mrs. Blanche Whetstone, applicant for pension. This will be presented to the Board at their next meeting. Very respectfully, Secretary. Page 025 October 23rd, 1913. Mrs. Blanche Whetstone, Ocala, Florida. Dear Madam: PENSION CLAIM #18680: Your pension claim has been carefully considered by the Board of Pensions, and they find that the proofs furnished of your husband’s service are not sufficient to grant you a pension. The two witnesses of his service only state that that they know of his service until he furnished a substitute and went home. The War Records, which are official, do not have any record of his service after November 1862. I note you say he returned to the War after furnishing a substitute, but no evidence has been furnished, neither can the Board locate any record which will give any proof of his service during the latter part of the War. Very respectfully, Secretary. Page 026 December 30th., 1913. Mrs. Robert S. Blake, 720 East Fourth Street, Ocala, Florida. Dear Madam: As I wrote you on October 18th., your letter of October 14th. with regard to the pension application of Mrs. Blanche Whetstone was carefully considered by the Board of Pensions, and the Board decided they could not reverse the former ruling of the Board in view of all the evidence on file with the claim. Very respectfully, Secretary. Page 027 We, the members of Dickison Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, do hereby petition the Board of Pensions to grant a pension to Mrs. Blanche Whetstone, the widow of William David Whetstone, whose record of service is recorded in the Confederate Military History, volume seven, page 843 of Alabama and Mississippi.
