D. 1859, in the county of Nassau in the State of Florida. I have not remarried since the death of my said husband. My husband, the said Julian J. Acosta enlisted and served in the 8th Fla Co. I Infantry of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and did not desert the Confederate or State service. During the war temporarily in North, South Carolina, only short time in each. 13. Do you own any real or personal property? One city lot in Fernandina. 14. What is the total value of your real and personal property? I tried to sell at $50.00 and could not sell – not salable. 15. Of what does your real and personal property consist? One lot in Fernandina, Fla. Lot 1, Blk 59. 16. Have you any income from any source and how much yearly? None. 17. Of whom is your family composed, state names and ages? Before me a D.W.C.Yarbrough, a Notary Public for the State at Large, personally came David Lang, and B.F.Whitner, who appeared as witnesses in support of the claim, or application of Mrs.Julia A. Acosta for an annuity under the laws of the State of Florida, providing for annuities for widows of deceased Confederate Soldiers and Sailors of the State of Florida, and said witnesses after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, each for himself deposes and says: 1. What is your name? David Lang and B.F.Whitner, and we reside at Chattahoochee, Fla. 2. How long have you known the applicant? We do not know her. 3. Where does she reside and how long has she been a resident of this State? We do not know. 4. Were you acquainted with her husband? We were. 5. Where and to whom was he married? We do not know. 6. Is he dead, if so, when and where did he die? We have been informed that he is dead, and that he died at Fernandina, Fla. But do not personally know the facts. 7. Was he a Soldier or Sailor in the Confederate service during the war between the States? He was a Soldier in the said service. 8. When did he enlist and in what organization? We do not know the date of his enlisted (sic), but he was with the Company of Capt. John M. Pons when that company joined us at Camp Bradford near Tallahassee, Fla. in Mch. 1862. 9. When was he discharged and for what cause? We do not now remember whether he was with the Regtment (sic) when captured at Sailor’s Creek, or with remnant which was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, but are quite sure he was included in one of these events. Page 016 10. Where and in what campaigns did he perform regular military duty? In the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia, from August 1862 until April 9, 1865. 11. Were either or both of you members of the same Company or Regiment with him? We were not of same Company, but in same Regiment. 12. Did he desert the Confederate or State service? No 13. Were either of you with the command when it surrendered? David Lang was with the company and surrendered at Appomattox C.H. and B.F.Whitner was captured with the Regiment at Sailor’s Creek. 14. Was the husband of the applicant present when the command surrendered? As stated in answer to question 9, we do not remember whether he was captured at Sailor’s Creek or surrendered at Appomattox C.H. 15. If not where was he? Answer same as to question 14. 16. Dear Madam: Yours of the 27th. inst. with inclosures (sic) received and noted and complying so far as my recollection and that of Capt.B.F.Whitner who was in the same Regiment, enables us to do, we have answered on a separate sheet the questions propounded in the application blank and have made oath to the answers before a local Notary Public, which I am quite sure will be accepted by the Pension Commissioners, as we are both personally known to them. We adopted this course in order to leave the regular printed blank for use in proving such facts as we did not have personal knowledge of, such as acquaintance with you, your marriage, &c.&c. The papers are all herewith returned, trusting that they will serve your purpose and that you may be successful in your application. I personally knew Julian as a boy when we both lived at Center Village,Ga. And during the whole term of his service in the army, during which times our associations were always pleasant.
