Ashland Tidings October 18,1880
ACCIDENTAL DEATH-The San Fransisco Chronicle of last Saturay brought the sad 
news of the death of Miss Sophia Wenger,of Crescent City,who spent several 
weeks in Ashland recently as the guest of Mrs.J.Houck.She was on her way from 
Crescent City to San Frasisco by steamer,and stopped at Eureka,Cal. on 
Wednesday night.Upon retiring she extinguished the flame of a gas jet but left 
the gas turned on,and,the room being closed,she was found dead the next 
morning.The remains were sent to Crescent City by steamer on Friday.Miss 
Wenger was an estimable young lady,and made numerous friends while in 
Ashland,all of whom will learn with sorrow of her untimely death
