Sanders ================================================================================ 2002 Myrtlewood Cemetary Fort Deposit, Lowndes County, Alabama Located just of State Highway 185, Old Fort Road Latitude: 315921N Longitude: 0863441W My father & myself, Joe C. Sanders, Sr., and Joe C. Sanders, Jr., made this 2001 survey, in November and December 2001. (Joe Sr. passed away Feb. 27, 2004) We are descendants of Jesse and Nancy (Salter) Barganier, of Fort Deposit, then called Ballard's Precinct, who is "said to have been the first to locate there, in 1820" according to Mildred Brewer Russell's book "Lowndes Court House". Jesse Barganier and his four brothers are the progenitors of all the Barganier families in this area. My father was raised near Fort Deposit, attended the Church of Christ in Fort Deposit and worked in the town for years before being elected Sheriff of adjacent Butler County. Mrs. Alice M. Lee, Mrs. Early G. Price, and Mrs. H. R. Ellis made the original historical survey in October 1974 for the Lowndes County Historical and Genealogical Society. That 1974 survey was used as the base for this 2001 survey and updates were made where necessary. Lowndes County researchers today should be greatly thankful for their early survey of Myrtlewood Cemetery. The Town of Fort Deposit administers Myrtlewood Cemetery. The original plat of the cemetery kept by the Town Hall in Fort Deposit is now unreadable. Over time, a few graves and headstones have been lost, either to natural circumstances such as erosion, wind and rain. Several headstones in the oldest section were damaged in the 1980's by vandalism where a number of the older, fragile were broken in half. Most of those were repaired, but a few remain unreadable. This survey, as well as the prior survey, is based on starting at the original eastern entrance to Myrtlewood, which is now closed. The brick arch at the original entrance is toppled to the ground in 2001. Visitors now enter from the south entrance, and can best orient themselves by going to the original entrance located on the far right from the new entrance. There are basically five sections to Myrtlewood Cemetery. A new, fifth section was added in the 1990's when the city acquired additional land to the west of the main cemetery. Driveways, except the new section, divide all the sections. The oldest section appears to Section A, and particularly that area surrounding the growth of cedar trees on the hill. The 2001 survey was taken roughly by walking each section of the cemetery from east to west, and each individual row from left to right, and back again. To find a grave using the 2001 survey, a searcher should be able to locate a grave using the numbering system, as those neighboring graves adjacent should have adjacent numbers on the survey. Using the original, arched east entrance as the starting point: Section A - lies to the right of the original entrance where the arch is toppled. On the northerly border is a chain link fence and Edgewood Street. Section B - is on the left of the original entrance, and is bounded by the driveways on completely. Section C - is at the extreme left, or south, of the original entrance. Section D - is at the far west of the cemetery. Section E - is the newest section, and lies furthest west, behind Section D. There were approximately 926 identifiable graves in 1974. Since then, 312 new burials have taken place, making a total of 1,238 identifiable graves. Only 23 graves identified in 1974 could not be found in 2001. The oldest burial in the cemetery appears to be that of James Phillips in 1825, although that gravestone could not be found in 2001. The next oldest found in 2001 is that of Cornelius Robinson, buried in 1835. The earliest born person in the cemetery is also that of James Phillips, whose gravestone in 1974 stated he was 80 years of age at death, making his birth about 1745. Next would be Ralph Bowie, born about 1781. The earliest actually inscribed birth in the cemetery is that of Jesse Barganier in 1801. While there are approximately 270 different surnames in Myrtlewood, the more numerous, widespread surnames include Barganier, Bell, Bishop, Black, Brooks, Carr, Callen, Cassady, Chestnutt, Crenshaw, Davis, Faulk, Glass, Goldsmith, Golson, Harris, Hawkins, McCrory, McPherson, Moorer, Norman, Nutt, Plaster, Porterfield, Priester, Ryals, Smith, Sullivan, White and Ziegler.
