To the declaration, the defendant fied four pleas in bar, and, in the fifth place, pleaded, "that Adam Carson, Sen. and Harris Brantley, two of the plaintiffs, had never taken upon themselves the execution of the will of the said David Carson,".... to which the plaintiffs replied "that Adam Carson. sen. and Harris Brantley, were named together with the other plaintiff, as executors, though they had not qualified, by giving bond and taking out letters... __________________________________________________________________________________ AL 108 O Published Sep 1835 Dallas County Died on Tuesday last, Mrs. Judah Maria Brantley in the 29th year of her age, wife of Harris Brantley, Esq of this county. ********************************************************************************** AL 108D Jun Term 1849 Leach and wife versus West, et als Error to Chancery Court of Dallas Bill filed by defendants against plaintiffs in error, two of whom are infants, to recorver certain slaves and to have an account of their hire, alleges that Jonathan Brantly, the father of the complaints, on Sept 12, 1834, conveyed by deed to James B. Brantley, another child, certain slaves, for and during the term of his nautural life, and at his death, having no child or children, then living, to his brothers and sisters or their descendants; that James B. Brantley took possession of the slaves under the deed; that James B. Brantley is now dead and at the time of his death, was in possession of all slaves named in the deed except one by the name of Watt, which said James Brantley in his lifetime had exchanged with his father for one by the name of Carey; that said James. B. Brantley left a widow, Elizabeth B., since married married to her co-defendant, Leach, but no child or children, and that since the death of James B. Brantley, all slaves embraced by deed, together with the slave, Carey, have been in possession of said Elizabeth B. and said Leach, who refuse to deliver them to the complainants. Williingham and wife against Josiah J. Harrell and wife purpose of setting aside an award. Mrs. Willingham, prior to her marriage with said Benjamin C., was the widow of Warren A. Brantley, deceased, who died in August 1838; and had qualified as executor of his last will and testament and as guardian of her two infant children by him, Louisiana and Warren Brantley. On her marriage to said Willingham, which took place in March, 1847, the latter became administrator and guardian in right oh his wife, and from that time acted jointly with her in the management of both trust. On March 21, 1855 (the date is left blank in the bill, and is not supplied by any other record) said Louisiana Brantley was married to Josiah J. Harrell. On Oct. 20, 1855, said Harrell and Willingham entered into a written agreement.. Census of 1850 shows Louisiana and Warren age 13 & 11, living in family of Joiner; also Benj. Born a slave in Selma, Ala., in 1834, David Brantley, Negroe, yesterday celebrated his 108th birthday in his home at 1223 1/2 Naomi Ave A resident of Los Angeles for more than 40 years; has been retired for many years. Brantley had a part in the Civil War as a servant to his master, the late General John H. Brantley of the Confederate Army, whose family name he took. Among his birthday tributes was a cake sent by the wife of Senator Kenny on which was inscribed the year of his birth and the present date. "I'll see the General before next Christmas," Brantley prophesied. He is in excellent health and his friends expect him to celebrate his 109th birthday next year. From California Newspaper sometimes after previous article FORMER SLAVE, 108, TAKEN TO HOSPITAL David J. Brantley, 108 year old negroe, yesterday was taken to General Hospital after he suffered a heart attack at his home, 1223 1/2 Naomi St. He told hospital attendants that he was born into slavery on Feb 15, 1834, at Selma, AL., on the plantation of John H. Brantley, whose name he later took as his own. He said he was freed from slavery shortly before the Civil War. NOTE: The General was an old man during the Civil War and did not serve in the Confederacy. He was made General for service rendered during the Indian wars in Florida in the 1830s. __________________________________________________________________________________ WILLS - DALLAS COUNTY Thomas Brantley 1822 Dallas County, Alabama - Will Book A. He was a Revolutionary War Soldier. Lived in Hancock County, GA in 1820 and was seen in Jones County in the early 1800s. He left several children. There is a settlement in Dallas County, now named Brantley after the name of his son John.
