LOCAL SOLDIER'S OUTFIT FIELD FIRING CHAMPS WITH THE FIFTH ARMY ITALY - Pvt. Henry Faulkner, whose home is on Route 1, Midland City, Ala. is a , member of a rifle company which recently won $936 in prize money' and the regimental championship in the 88th Infantry Division in a field firing contest with Infantry weapons. The company, which has had, combat experience on the Fifth Army front in Italy, topped all other fighting units in the regiment with a score of 1006. It nosed out the nearest company by a single point, while no other outfit scored more than 1000. The money was contributel by individual members of each company participating and was used bY the winning outfit for a party for the men. The competing companies fired 1460 rounds Of ammunition. Eight rounds each were fired from 120 M-1 (Garand), rifles, 20 rounds from seven Browning Automatic rifles, 15 rounds from five carbines, seven rounds from five 45- caliber automatic pistols and 50 rounds from two light machlneguns. A heavy machinegun section composed of two 30-caliber water- cooled guns also fired 50 rounds each for each participating company. Stress in scoring was placed on hitting all the targets, with eight points given for the first hit and only one point for each successive hit on the same target. The winning company hit all but 11 of their targets. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THREE OZARK BOYS AT GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS Three Ozark, Ala. men are receiving their Initial Naval Indoctrination at the U.S. Navel Training Center, Great Lakes,Ills. Their recruit training consists of instruction In seamanship, military drill and general Naval procedure. Durlng this period a series of aptitude tests will be taken by the recruits to determine whether they will be assigned to a Naval Service School or to immediate duty at sea. When their recruit training is completed, these men will receive a period of leave. They are: Earl B. Hutto, 18, Rt. 3, Saxon D. Dykes,30. Box 561; Charles D. Weeks, 17,Rt. 2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PAUL J. THOMPSON IS PROMOTED TO SERGEANT CAMP BARKLEY~ Texas, Army Service Forces Training Center-Headquarters of the Army Service Forces Training Center announced this week the promotion of Paul J.Thompson, Co. B, 61st Med.Tng. Bn. to Sergeant. He resides at Daleville, route 1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LOWELL L. TRAYWICK AT GREAT LAKES, ILL. Lowell L. Traywick, 26, husband of Willie Pearl Traywick, 4111 Meritas Drive, Columbus, Ga., is receiving his Initial Naval indoctrination at the U. S. Naval TrainIng Center, Great Lakes, ILL, in Company 1861. His recruit ,training consists of Instruction in seamanship, military drill, and general Naval procedure. JULIAN GODWIN AT HOME ON FURLOUGH , Pvt Julian Godwin who Is stationed at camp Bowie, Texas is at home with his family on furlough. Julian entered the service several months ago and this is his first furlough home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVT. JOHN E. WILSON WOUNDED IN ACTION Mr. and Mrs. Ovie I Wilson of Ozark route two were notified last week by the War Department that their son, Pvt. John E. Wilson had been seriously wounded In battle somewhere in France on Sent. 14. Pvt. Wilson entered the service June 20, 1942 and has been overseas since February, 1944. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SAXON DYKES-TRAINING AT GREAT LAKES The many friends of Saxon Dykes over the county, will be Interested to know that he Is at Great Lakes Illinois, where he Is taking his boot training for the Navy. He was appointed Clerk of the 1861st Co. Before entering the Navy, saxon was Principal of Newton High and Elementary School. His wife, the former Johnnie Mae Weeks and son, Saxon, Jr., are residing in Ozark during his asslgnment. She Is a member of the Dale County high school faculty. Saxon states that there are, three Dale County boys at his station, Earl HUTTO of Ewell, a boy by the name of LOVE from Midland City and LOWELL TRAWICK. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WILLIAM B. SHIRAH, USN AT HOME ON FURLOUGH William B Shirah, Petty Officer, USN, stationed at San Diego, Calif., arrived,home Sunday afternoon for five days furlough with his mother Mrs. Shirah, Skipperville, route two. Pvt. William entered the Navy in June 1942 and this Is his first visit home. He will report for oversea duty on return to hiS station. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVT. CHAS. R. STRICKLAND RETURNS TO Camp Hood Chas. R. Strickland, who Is stationed at North Camp Hood,Texas, spent a ten day furlough with his family. He entered the Army In April of this year, received his basic training ,at Camp Barkley, Texas, completed a course in Advanced Engine Mechanics at Fort, Crook, Nebraska, and is now taking advanced training at North Camp Hood. Pvt. Strickland is with the 45lst Ord. H, A. M. Co. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LT. R.C. JOINER. JR., AT HOME ON LEAVE Lieut. R. C. Joiner, Jr., stationed at Fort Devens, Mass., is at home on a ten-day leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Joiner. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HORACE, O. BRUCE AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Horace O. Bruce. CM 1/c, stationed at Davisville, R. I., is at home on 20-day furlough due him for oversea duty. Horace was recently discharged from the Naval hospital at Pensacolam Fla., and his friends are delighted to see him fully recovered. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CADET JOHN McDONALD AT HOME FOR WEEK END Cadet John McDonald has returned to Marion Military Institute, Marion, Ala., after spending a week with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Max O'Neal.
